Job Summary/Job Purpose:

The role of the Interpreting Department Specialist is to ensure projects are executed in a timely and financially responsible way while meeting company and client requirements. The specialist is responsible for handling the entire interpreter assignment, including but not limited to receiving, scheduling, and confirming interpreting requests. The person in this role is a liaison between interpreters, clients and our team, and demonstrates the interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse group. The person in this role resolves scheduling issues, facilitates solutions, and confers with team members/leadership to handle more complex situations. This role is critical to the company's mission of overcoming communication and cultural barriers in our communities.

Job Overview: Interpreting Department Specialist - Hourly

  • Ensure interpreters use best practices and required processes, systems, and tools
  • Troubleshoot and resolve supplier, client, and project challenges
  • Assist in training and coaching colleagues and clients
  • Review, process, and audit appointment records for quality oversight
  • Provide on-site, telephone, and video interpreting as needed
  • Track and report Key Performance Indicators weekly
  • Recruit interpreters at events that may take place in the evenings and on weekends
  • Assist with screening, onboarding, and continuing education of interpreters
  • Implement Customer Experience Quality Control field audits
  • Proctor Language Proficiency tests for clients’ employees and prospects 
  • Prepare service proposals (quotes) for prospective interpreting clients
  • Identify suppliers who deliver substandard work, provide weekly transparency to team/leadership, and take appropriate corrective action
  • Share knowledge across the company; propose ideas for improving quality and efficiency
  • Be on-call periodically to troubleshoot issues after hours, as needed
  • Be proactive in self-development and continuing education
  • Proactively promote our brand within the industry, among clients, prospective clients, suppliers, prospective suppliers, and the community in general
  • Proactively seek, recommend, and execute solutions that support company goals, such as but not limited to inclusive diversity and providing a voice to people who may not otherwise have one
  • Participate in team building and strategic planning events in-person or virtually, as needed
  • Proactively support account managers to grow the profitability of new and existing accounts
  • Maximize positive engagement with our contractors by making the most of their capabilities
  • Create and maintain healthy, positive, and productive internal and external relationships
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and strategic objectives

Skills / Qualifications:

  • 4-year degree or equivalent experience in linguistics, interpretation, or translation
  • 2 years of experience working in the language services industry that helps others to communicate across linguistic and cultural barriers
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and one other language
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Possess a depth of understanding of various cultures
  • Lived outside the country of origin for at least one year
  • Experience working and negotiating successfully with freelance contractors
  • Ability to quickly build collaborative, trusting relationships
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
  • Proven ability to work in supporting roles
  • Ability to understand the needs of clients and convey them to others
  • Continuous education on industry trends and emerging best practices
  • Interpreting industry certifications preferred, such as but not limited to American Translators Association, Certified Medical Interpreter, Certified Healthcare Interpreter
